Hello my name is Marco and I’ve been a Sunset Auto Wholesale employee for the last six months. I am leaving to go chase my dreams and teach English abroad in Japan, but before I go I’d like to share this chapter of life with you.
This is the story of how I got the first job in my field.
Nine months ago I graduated college it was one of the scariest times in my life, I had this degree in Digital Technology and Culture, but I didn’t have a job involving digital technology in any way, in fact I didn’t have any job at all. Thankfully a friend of mine had given me a job at her diner in Sumner Dixie’s(check them out the food is delicious). I’m very grateful to have worked there as I was able to get over the fear of speaking to others. It was hard for me to shake the feeling that I went to school to get a degree that wasn’t doing me any good.

Sunset Auto Wholesale was looking for a Digital Marketing Assistant. Me being the person I was decided to hand my resume in person. The first time I walked into Sunset Auto, two things that stood out to me. Farbulous stickers were plastered everywhere and the DJ set up upstairs. I handed in my application, resume, and introduced myself. After I left didn’t think anything of it, I had filled so many applications and had never heard anything back from anyone. I was working my diner job when I got a call and a Facebook message from the owner himself Nathan Craig.
The Interview
A couple hours later I found myself sitting at Pacific Southern, a local soul food restaurant, with the owner of Sunset, Farb, and Adrian. When I met Nate he was really transparent and real about everything, it was refreshing to have someone be so real and honest with me. We talked about life on a deeper level.Nate also brought up my YouTube, website, and music content. It impressed me he studied them before we met. Because it was hard for me to like my own work, I quickly brushed off his compliments. I was shocked when he seemed mad I didn’t have more confidence in myself.
“Your stuff isn’t that bad, and it will get better if you just start uploading stuff, stop being such a perfectionist, also stop apologizing and learn how to accept compliments”
He then told me that we all have greatness in us, we just have to get it. I was then instructed draw our waitress and give it to her.
“She’ll love it trust me” he assured me. I handed her the sketch, and Nate was right our waitress she really liked it. After getting to know each other better, and spinning some records I had my first job in my field.
So Many Good Things
Throughout these last six months, there werw a lot of sweet cars, funny videos, and drawings. I got to know so many wonderful and amzing people. All of whom have some fantastic stories. There were a lot of firsts, mistakes, and things that didn’t go as planned, but so many good things as well. I will take all that I have learned and apply it to my own pursuits as I document my travels to a new land.
I can’t thank the team at sunset enough! I’m very happy to have met you, we shared so many experiences together in such a short time. I will continue learning and applying the lessons Tony and Nate have taught me as I go into the future.
I will keep DJing, drawing, producing, and learning marketing my way through life. When I come back I will be more valuable, helpful, and knowledgeable about digital marketing.
I’d like to be able to grow and give back to the team here when I can.
Love <3,
Marco
