Why I’m bringing life back to the laidback basics?
After much thought I realized that I suffer from the same flaw as one of Homer’s hero’s. Many essays have been written about The Odyssey’s use of hubris as a character flaw. It never occurred to me that what I read in that book could apply to my life. Hubris is a grand display of taunting Gods or “hold my beer” fails right? No, hubris is a shadow that follows all of us in our daily lives.
What Woke Me Up??
What woke me up was a simple art exercise
“Draw Steve From Minecraft”
I laughed as my friend suggested doing something that sounded too simple.
Draw a box. . . I can do that. . . Right??
Wrong
An artist of almost 10 years my inability to to draw a box in perspective was the biggest piece of humble pie I had eaten in my life. My pride was a severely damaged, but that failure was one of the biggest awakenings since Neo left the Matrix. It’s the level of shock that makes you reconsider more than your pursuit of artistic knowledge, but what you know about life itself.
I’m Going Back to the Basics

Whether it’s life skills, art, streaming, or sports I’ve learned that the Fundamentals can easily be overlooked. Coaches, teachers, and parents try, with no avail, to emphasize the importance of doing basic things well to their pupils. While some people are able to learn this lesson at a young age, I, and maybe those of you reading this, had to touch a stove before learning the meaning of hot.
Deserve What You Have
How do I life? What does adulting even mean? Is it time to go back to the basics?
While how to life sounds like a meme, it’s a question I’ve seriously contemplated over the past ten years. Life is like Minecraft in the sense that both are sandbox games. Finding meaning, setting objectives, and reaching goals falls on the responsibility of the end user. It can be easy to brush of responsibility of where you are in life to other factors, but remember there are always stories of those who overcome adversity to reach their goals.
While I don’t identify as a true Millennial, and I’ve never felt entitled to things like promotions, positions in sports, or cars I didn’t have the money for. The one thing I felt entitled to was a better position in life itself. When I couldn’t draw that box, it caused me to change my attitude. Therefore I’ll be working working to deserve things I already have instead of feeling like I deserve more.
Back to Basic Life Skills
I’ve managed to make it this far in life while drifting like a leaf in the wind. How did I land a stable, well compensated office job with great benefits and an awesome boss in a country like Japan, while seriously lacking Skills such as planning, scheduling, organization, and setting goals ?
While I’ve been able to feed myself, put a roof over my head, and survive. If I want to progress up Maslow’s hierarchy of needs it’s time that I master basic life skills such as.
- Organization
- Planning
- Scheduling
- Time Management
- Financial and Asset Procurement and Management
Back to Basic Goals for My Life
For the last 10 years there’s been a voice in the back of my head telling me to pursue these goals. It’s there when I wake up in the morning, throughout my day, and when I close my eyes at night. Even my dreams are extensions of how I can reach my life goals.
